Our Junior Firefighter Program

Doyle Hose Company No. 2 has been home of an Explorer Post since 1988. In 2021 we transitioned our Explorer program to a Junior Firefighter program ran by the fire district. December 6, 1987-Jerry Schoemick from the Boy Scouts of America spoke on starting an Explorer program.

January 6, 1988-Explorer advisers have had 3-4 meetings already. South Line, Newton Abbott, and Town Line have given us copies of their constitutions to review.

February 3, 1988-The first copy of the By-laws for a Firematic Explorer Post were distributed to all members. Ben Miller seconded by Robert Trembowicz made a motion to establish a post. 

March 6, 1988-The Explorer Advisors had a meeting with the Fire Commissioners. They were given copies of the rules and regulations. The fire district lawyer is looking at them now. 

May 4, 1988-The Board of Fire Commissioners announced that they have approved the Explorer Post. 

May 15, 1988-The Advisors of the Explorer group met with parents of prospective Explorers at a meeting at the fire hall.

June 1, 1988-Ben Miller reported they met with the parents of interested Explorers and showed them a video on Scouting.

July 6, 1988-Ben Miller reported the charges for the post were $20 initiation fee, $5.95 for dues for each Explorer, $1.80 each Explorer for insurance, $7.50 for each Advisor. The charter is good for 18 months and comes to a total of $151.75 including the adults. Motion by Ben Miller seconded by Don Jagodzinski to pay the bill.

August 3, 1988-Elections were held for the post officers. They were Captain Brent Sala, Secretary Don Cialone, and Treasurer Alan Cialone. Five new members were added for a total of ten. There was a motion by Jim Koral seconded by Robert Trembowicz to have the Explorers come with us to the fair. Motion by Jim Koral seconded by Edward Cichy to buy 20 stickers for the Explorers helmets.

September 3, 1988-It was requested that the Explorers are mailed copies of the Chief’s and President’s Reports

October 5, 1988-Several of the Explorers are taking an Essentials of Firemanship course. There will be a Cluster meeting at our hall on October 24th, 13 posts are schedule to come. 

November 2, 1988-Motion by Jim Koral seconded by Bill Lauber to buy ten baseball hats that have Doyle 2 Explorer Post 300 on them. 

November 15, 1988-The Explorers held a car wash, it was their first fundraiser.

December 4, 1988-The Advisors reported the Explorers raised $145 at their car wash. They will be selling beef sticks for the holidays as their next fundraiser.

January 1, 1989-The Explorers reported a $214 profit from the beef stick sales. Motion by Ben Miller seconded by Bob Barczak to appropriate $150 for food and registration fees for a camping trip the Explorers are going on at Schoelkoff from January 21st and 22nd. Explorers have a ten o’clock curfew for the Installation. 

January 21st-22nd, 1989-Three Advisors and five Explorers attended a campout at Schoelfkoff Scout Reservation. 

March 1, 1989-There is a Charter meeting this Thursday at Newton Abbott. Three Advisors and five Explorers attended a campout. Motion by Jim Koral seconded by Leonard Szymanski to spend $225 for helmets for the explorers to wear.

April 2, 1989-The Explorers just attended a lock in at the YMCA with other Explorer Posts. There was swimming and volleyball and other activities. The Explorers will be able to participate in Firemen’s Recognition Day. They would like to purchase shirts, patches, and decals for the helmets out of their money. 

June 7, 1989-The Explorers requested to run another car wash. Motion Joe Tokasz seconded by Joe Fox to grant permission. 

July 5, 1989-The Explorer shirts have arrived at a cost of $19.95 each plus $4 for the patches.

August 2, 1989-The Explorers asked permission to parade with the company at the Erie County Fair and requested membership cards so they can get in. Motion Robert Trembowicz seconded by Leonard Szymanski to invite the Explorers to the family picnic.

September 10, 1989-The Explorers asked permission to use the hall for a car wash fundraiser. Motion by Robert Curto seconded by Don Swiniarski pending the Fire Commissioners approval.

November 1, 1989-Motion Ben Miller seconded by Joe Tokasz to renew our charter for another 19 months.

February 7, 1990-The Explorers will be attending a campout at the Niagara Falls Air Base. U.B. will be having a class for adult advisors the cost is $5 per person. Motion Ben Miller seconded by Ron Hendershot to pay for the Advisors and youth officers. Motion by Jim Koral seconded by Frank Wilczak to buy sweatpants for the Explorers and pay any overages.

April 20, 1990-The Explorers had a demonstration at the Buffalo Airport Fire Department. South Line and Rescue’s Juniors went with us. The Explorers will have a display at the Firemen’s Building at the Erie County Fair this year.

July 1, 1990-Motion by Don Swinarski seconded by Tom Janowski to include the Explorers in the Honor Guard for Don Cialone for his Junior Firefighter of the Year award from the WNYVFA.

July 20, 1990-Doyle No. 2 Explorer Don Cialone Jr. was recognized by the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association (WNYVFA) at their annual convention held in Brockport, New York for his work with our Explorer program.

August 1, 1990-The post is looking to switch the drill nights to Thursday nights from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the future.

September 5, 1990-Motion by Ben Miller seconded by Leonard Szymanski to renew the charter for the post for another 18 months.

December 9, 1990-Explorers will be changing their drill nights from Fridays to Wednesday’s. They requested to set up a table at Career night at JFK High School.

March 5, 1990-Dean Lauber was appointed as an Advisor for the post.

September 4, 1991-The Explorers have five new members coming in.

October 6, 1991-The Explorers have five new members for a total of 12. 

December 1, 1991-The Explorers are having a pepperoni sale for Christmas.

June 3, 1992-The Explorers purchased jackets for $360.

September 30, 1992-The Explorers participated in a mock accident at the Buffalo Airport.

October 7, 1992-James Kochel was brought in as a new member.

November 4, 1992-Derric Demyanick was brought in as a new member. The Post Advisor will attend training.

January 6, 1993-Don Cialone was appointed the Advisor of the Post.

February 3, 1993-In a letter published on this date from Tom Johnston of the Exploring Division of the GNFC Council, NYS OFPC has disallowed Explorers from taking state fire courses. Motion by Ben Miller and seconded by Tom Janowski expressing our displeasure that NYS OFPS is eliminating training for Explorers. 

March 10, 1993-Our Post the Explorer President’s Association meeting at our hall.

April 17, 1993-The Explorers held a bottle and can fundraiser.

May 5, 1993-It was suggested that Explorers be given preference for new membership to the company. 

May 21-23, 1993-Members of our Explorer Post tent camped at the Hamburg Fairgrounds during a Boy Scout Camporall where they manned a first aid station and mentored professional first responders from LaSalle Ambulance as well as firefighters from Armor, Doyle No. 2, Lake Shore, Spring Brook. The crew handled 26 injuries over the weekend, judged a first aid competition and held a “Jaws of Life” demonstration for the over 350 attendees.

June 3, 1993-It was reported that the Explorers made $150 on the bottle and can drive and $98 on a car wash.

July 7, 1993-There was a discussion about swearing in 16-year-olds to comply with VFBL requirements.

August 4, 1993-The Explorers have $524.56 in their treasury.

April 14, 1994-The Explorers toured the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

June 3rd-5th, 1994-The Explorers went camping for the weekend.

July 21, 1994-The Explorers held a First Aid competition.

June 25, 1994-The Explorers went to Darien Lake.

July 6, 1994-Dave Winicki was brought on as a new Explorer.

August 3, 1994-The Explorers will once again have a display at the Firemen’s Building at the Erie County Fair.

November 2, 1994-The Explorers held a 5th Anniversary dinner.

January 4, 1995-The Explorers are on hold will meet soon to reorganize.

February 1, 1995-The post submitted a new Charter. Meetings changed to alternating Saturdays.

May 5, 1995-It was reported that there was poor turnout for Saturday drills, looking at a different schedule.

March 3, 1999-Motion Dan Nash seconded by Tom Nowak to allow the Explorers to spend $375.84 for eight cases of pepperoni for a fundraiser.

May 5, 1999-It was reported there are eight new members.

June 2, 1999-The Explorers had a meeting with parents.

July 7, 1999-Motion by Brian Gould and seconded by Ron Hendershot for $150 for uniform shorts.

August 4, 1999-The Explorers spent $115 on uniform items. They are parading at the Erie County Fair. They will be participating in a drill at Dingens Pool.

September 1, 1999-The post brought in another new member for a total of eight.

October 6, 1999-Brian Gould was presented a certificate for his good work with the post.

January 5, 2000-Motion by Dan Nash seconded by George Lewis to renew the Charter for $114.80.

February 2, 2000-It was reported that the Explorers were participated in a Habitat for Humanity project.

April 5, 2000-All Explorers are attending EFAT training.

August 2, 2000-Six new members were signed up.

October 4, 2000-The Explorers participated in Fire Explorer Olympics. The roster is at 16 members.

February 7, 2001-The raffle the post held netted $400. Drills will be on Thursday nights.

March 7, 2001-Motion by Ron Rogowski seconded by Tom Janowski to pay $55 for EVAC training.

July 1, 2001-Motion by Brian Gould seconded by Tom Janowski to purchase a banner for the post for $170.

August 11, 2001-The Explorers purchased uniforms and made $100 on a car wash. Motion Brian Gould seconded by Denise Nash to spend $308 on a banner. Motion by Leonard Szymanski seconded by Bill Lauber to cover $140 of the cost of the banner for printing the emblem.

September 5, 2001-The Explorers elected new officers and are participating in the Fire Olympics again.

October 3, 2002-The Explorers place 5th in the fire Olympics.

November 7, 2001-The Explorers will be participating in our fire company food drive for the needy.

February 6, 2002-The post thanks Ben Miller and George Lewis for operating the post. The Charter was renewed again.

July 3, 2002-The Explorers participated in a Buffalo Destroyers game and a campout. Car wash was a success.

November 6, 2002-Motion by Ron Rogowski seconded by Don Swinarski to donate $99 for the Explorers Christmas Party and send them a thank you letter.

February 5, 2003-Motion by Ron Rogowski seconded by Frank Biedron to pat the Charter for $114.80.

August 6, 2003-Explorers made $27 on the car wash and discussed drills and a display at the fair.

November 5, 2003-The post has two new members and will be doing community service. Motion by Denise Nash seconded by George Lewis to allow the post to use the Doyle 2 name on sweatshirts.

December 5, 2004-Motion by Mary Ellen Lewis seconded by Ron Hendershot to purchase shirts for the two new Explorers.

February 2, 2005-Motion by Tom Janowski seconded by Ron Hendershot to pat the charter expenses of $48. Motion by Ron Hendershot seconded by John Oldacre to purchase three uniform shirts. Motion by Ben Miller seconded by Leonard Szymanski to reimburse the post for the cost of the shirt patches. Motion by George Lewis seconded by Bill Lauber for $50 for the Parents meeting with the Advisors.

March 2, 2004-George Lewis thanked everyone for their help. The post went on various tours for Career Month. Motion by Anthony Olszowy seconded by Jay Morosey Sr. to purchase a uniform shirt for a new Explorer. 

May 5, 2005-Motion by George Lewis Seconded by Janice Fulmer to have the fire company supply the paper products for the Pancake Breakfast. Explorers went to the ECFTA for hazmat training.

August 20, 2005-The Explorers had another car wash fundraiser.

September 7, 2005-The post now has 14 members.

December 4, 2005-Motion by George Lewis seconded by John Oldacre to renew the Chart at a cost of $155.

May 21, 2006-The Explorers ran a breakfast fundraiser. 

June 7, 2006-The pancake fundraiser made a profit of $2,085.07

December 2, 2007-Motion by George Lewis seconded by Don Swinarski to purchase a plaque for the Explorer of the Year Award. The Charter was renewed again for $70. 

August 5, 2009-The posy currently has three members.

May 4, 2011-Discussed the future of the Explorer program.

February 1, 2012-Looking to combine the post with other fire companies.

November 6, 2013-Trying to begin the program again in January, looking for an additional committee member.

June 4, 2014-Five people signed up for a presentation at JFK Middle School. 

November 22, 2016-Denise Nash met with a representative from JFK High School about the Explorer Post.

January 5, 2017-First Meeting of restarted Explorer Program – Gabe Carrick elected president, Justin Vohwinkel Secretary, Robert Dombrowski Captain

June 9, 2018-Explorer Post 300 is the beneficiary of the 5th Annual Red Knights Chapter 47 “Hems Angels” motorcycle ride. Over $6,000 donated to the program

July 27, 2018-Our Explorers took First Place in Waterball and Second Place in Hose Placement at the Western New York Volunteer Fireman’s Association convention held at Fricano Park in North Collins. 

August 2018-Explorers use the proceeds from the Hems Angles ride to take a ride on the Buffalo Fire Boat E.M. Cotter, with the Hy-View Explorers

July 26, 2019- Our Explorers took First Place in Hose Placement, Hydrant Hookup, and Waterball at the Western New York Volunteer Fireman’s Association convention held at the Cambria Fire Company.

August 2, 2019-Doyle No. 2 Explorer Markeas Suminski received an Honorable Mention for Junior Firefighter of the Year from the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen

In 2021 the Explorer program transitioned to the Doyle Fire District Junior Firefighter Program

June 21, 2022-At the Cheektowaga Police Department’s Do the Right Thing dinner Doyle No. 2 Junior Firefighter President Lilly Stoll received an award for being Outstanding Community Members and members of the volunteer fire service

March 25, 2023-Doyle No. 2 Member Lillian Stoll was awarded the 2022 Les and Marge Young Memorial Award at the Erie County Fire Chief's Mutual Aid Organization/Erie County Volunteer Firefighters Association Awards Dinner for her dedication as President of our Junior Firefighters Program and her academic and sports achievements at JFK High School all while achieving her New York State EMT-B certification.

June 10, 2023-Doyle Junior Firefighters are the beneficiary of the 9th Annual Red Knights Chapter 47 “Hems Angels” Motorcycle Run

August 4, 2023-Rookie Doyle No. 2 Firefighter Lillian Stoll received the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firefighters (SWAVF) Junior Firefighter of the Year Award at a ceremony held at Lake Shore High School in Evans, New York.

April 6, 2024-Junior Firefighter Kaya Watson was awarded the Junior Firefighter of the year at the Joint Erie County Firefighters Association, Erie County Chiefs Association, and Erie County Fire Police Association Dinner at Millgrove FD

June 8, 2024-Doyle Junior Firefighters are the beneficiary of the 10th Annual Red Knights Chapter 47 “Hems Angels” Motorcycle Run

January 30, 2025-Junior Firefighters and advisors participated in a Try SCUBA class, put on by Buffalo Scuba
